Impact of alcohol dependency on oral health: A cross-sectional comparative study

Excessive alcohol consumption inevitably affects oral health – the oral cavity, oral mucosa and teeth. Studies have indicated that alcohol dependents may have increased risk of dental caries, probing pocket depth and mucosal lesions.

A recent study of 76 alcoholic patients was conducted and featured in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research to assess the impact of alcohol dependency on oral health status among alcoholics in comparison with non-alcoholics. Results showed there was higher instance of dental caries, periodontitis and mucosal lesion among the alcohol dependent subjects.
